I think it’s safe to say that most guys don’t like shopping. Mother’s Day is just around the corner, and not only do you need a special way to say “Thank You” to your own mom, if you have children, you definitely don’t want to forget about their mom! So many men think that since their partner is not their mom, they shouldn’t do anything special, but a little bit of effort can go a long way. It goes without saying that being a mom is one of the hardest jobs in the world, and they deserve to hear how much they are appreciated.
I polled over 8000 Network of Moms members to find out exactly what moms want for mothers day. Before you worry about having to spend a lot of money, a lot of these suggestions are free or inexpensive.
The # 1 request was for Mothers Day was sleeping in, followed by not having to do any laundry. And that doesn’t mean leaving the laundry for your partner to do the next day, bonus points if you do laundry, fold it and put it away.
Another most requested gift, is the gift of time…. alone time. Moms would love a day to themselves to recharge. Dads, take the kids out for the day and leave your partner home alone to do whatever she wants. It may not sound that fun, but trust me, moms rarely have quiet time without having to look after anyone.
When’s the last time your family had professional pictures taken? Family pics are probably one of the most cherished gifts as it captures a place in time before the little ones are grown up. Dads, surprise your wife with professional pictures of your children or book an appointment (again – leaving as little work for mom as possible) for a fresh set of family photos. One of the most referred photographers in Saint John is Photography by Ashley Daigle who has a studio in uptown on Canterbury Street. Ashley is a mom that has lots of experience working with children and some of the sweetest backdrops to choose from. If an outdoorphoto shoot is more your style, Ashley does those too.
Moms love gift certificates for a massage or spa day however they often say they don’t get time to use them. Moms said that they’d love if you went the next step and booked the appointment. Check her schedule to see when she’s free and make sure child care is covered so that there is no planning to be done on her end, all she needs to do is show up and be pampered.
In-Home Spa Day.
If you are in the Saint John and surrounding areas and want to make it even easier for mom to get pampered, check out local business Pretty Pedis Plus where the spa comes to you! Spa owner Julie Blyth runs the mobile esthetics business and offers in-home pedicures, manicures and facial treatment using the Arbonne skincare line so everything is pure, safe and beneficial. These relaxing treatments will leave your mom feeling soothed, refreshed and spoiled. If you’re interested in a gift certificate, simply send a message to Pretty Pedis Plus Facebook page. She even offers spa parties!
Cook for Her.
Cooking is another chore that moms would like a break from. A surprise dinner reservation was another of the most requested things for Mothers Day. Don’t just buy her a gift certificate for her favorite restaurant, line up child care, make the reservation and surprise her. Sometimes child care is hard to find, so don’t worry if you need to bring the kids along. There are many local restaurants Where Kids Eat Free. If eating out isn’t your thing, have your children help plan a nice dinner at home. Kids love to help cook and they’ll feel proud of what they’ve created.
Let’s face it, after having kids, your car isn’t as clean as it used to be. A great gift for moms would be a clean car, inside and out, and the kids can be involved in helping out on this one. Don’t forget to vacuum the crumbs out from under the car seats!
You all know how much stuff you have to bring with you when you leave the house, Thirty-One Gifts offer trendy and affordable bags. Local Network of Moms Entrepreneur Tina Stallings Downey recommends the Large Utility Tote – the most popular items purchased by moms. You can surprise your wife (or your mom) with a beautiful personalized bag, or if you’re having a hard time picking just one product you can purchase a gift certificate directly from Tina by sending off an email to email@example.com. I guarantee this is one gift that will be put to great use whether you still have children at home or not. These are perfect bags for the park, beach, Costco, the gym and traveling.

Make her feel confident.
One thing all moms can relate to is that once we’ve carried a child, our body is never the same and we may not feel as confident in our clothes as before. Local business simplySTYLISH helps moms style and love the clothes they already have, learn how to get more versatility in their wardrobe and shop with a purpose. One thing that business owner and Wardrobe Stylist Amanda Hanson understands is that feeling fabulous in your clothes is not determined by your age, colour, shape, size or background. No matter what a moms challenges or goals are, it’s important for women to feel fabulous and once again confident in their clothes. Amanda does just that with her Wardrobe Styling Session,Shopping Styling Session, Personal Style Guide, Mini Styling Session (this would be awesome if you’re doing family photos) or a Wardrobe Makeover. If you’re not local to Saint John, don’t worry, you can even get a virtual consultation! For those that are local, you can order a gift certificate or book a session by contacting Amanda through her simplySTYLISH Facebook Page.
Dine and Stay Package.
Want to escape for a night? The beautiful Algonquin Resort in St. Andrews has a Mother’s Day Brunch package for May 12th – 13th. This includes Saturday night accommodation for two adults (children under 18 stay for free) and an elaborate spread for Sunday brunch for two adults, and children under 5 eat free. This resort is amazing for a romantic getaway, but also so much fun for children. There is a tonne of beautiful indoor space to explore, and games in the lobby. You really feel like you’re staying in a castle. The indoor pool is so clean and they have an awesome water slide that’ll be sure to entertain kids of all ages.
Create Custom Stuff.
When I was younger I would always create a homemade coupon book for my mom, including things such as watering the flowers, breakfast in bed, sweeping the floor, and fun things such as playing a board game together or having a picnic in the tree house. This can be a fun activity to let their creativity flow. If your children can’t yet write, have them draw out the coupons and see if mom can guess what it is.
Most moms love (need) coffee to survive some days. If she doesn’t already have a custom photo mug, sort through her favorite photos and create one. You still have time to order online from Costco and have it delivered before Mother’s Day.
Another fun and cheap craft is to pick up paint from your local dollar store and have the kids to do a cute handprint craft. You can also find clay pots and canvas at the dollar store or Michaels craft store(don’t forget your coupons if you go to Michaels). This is a little bit messy but so fun for the kids and mom will love the personal touch. There are so many ideas on Pinterest. Below is one my girls made last year.
Remember, the most important things that moms want for Mother’s Day is to know that she’s appreciated, so mark your calendars for Sunday, May 13th and try to make her day a little bit special.
P.S. If you’re a dad reading this, did you realize there is a new group dedicated just to dads? I invite you to check out the Network of Dads Facebook group where you can ask questions and network with other dads regardless if your kids are newborn, toddlers, school aged or teens.
